Participant Privacy

Privacy and Confidentiality

We take participant privacy and confidentiality very seriously. All data collection and handling procedures have been reviewed and approved by a University of Michigan Institutional Review Board (IRB). No identifiable information will ever be shared outside of the project team. The data are stored on password-protected computers and secure servers, and all team members are trained in human subjects research and data security practices. Only authorized team members have access to the data and identifiable information such as names and contact information is never stored with the anthropometric data.

Important Note: Children appearing in images on this website and in the data browser are not study participants. You will see three types of images on these pages and in our tools:

  • We use stock photos of children and youth to illustrate applications. These images are from either free/open or licensed sources.
  • The study methods are illustrated using photos taken in our laboratories of children and youth who were not study participants. The parents of these children provided consent for the taking and use of these photos and the children provided oral assent. We also de-identify these images by blurring the faces.
  • We show renderings of outputs from our statistical shape models. Although these renderings look realistic, they are not images of actual children. The renderings are generated from the statistical shape models that we create from the study data.
